Halloween

Halloween is derived from an ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of the season of the sun and the beginning of the season of darkness and cold. The Celts believed that evil spirits came with the long hours of darkness. They dressed up as ghosts and spirits hoping the real spirits would mistake them for one of their own.
The dressing up tradition is still around today. In Scotland pumpkins or turnips are carved into lanterns and children go ‘guising’. Children knock on doors demanding a ‘trick or treat‘ disguised as ghosts and witches.
At Camphill Blair Drummond we decorate the houses and dress up in costumes before going on a ghost walk around the mansion house.
