Zoe’s story

“When Zoe was five months old, a doctor told us she had Cerebral Palsy and that she’d never walk, talk or ‘do much’. Thankfully, another doctor said ‘keep pushing her’. Gradually, Zoe learned to walk, at first with a frame and later with calipers.

After Zoe left school at 19 we heard about Camphill Blair Drummond. The first time we walked through the doors we were met with the warm smell of baking bread and a whole group of students came up to Zoe and began signing to her. She gave me a huge smile and I could see she loved the place immediately.

Zoe has been here for 15 years now and a whole new world has opened up for her. If Blair Drummond were to ever close, it would be devastating for her. It’s her whole life. We are now in our 60′s and simply couldn’t provide the full-time care Zoe needs at home. As far as I know, the only alternative would be for her to live in a sheltered flat with shifts of carers coming in around the clock. I would never want that life for her.

Zoe has progressed so much since coming here. Now she makes very beautiful pottery – she has a real talent for it. She makes baskets and things for the workshop too. I’m so proud of her!”
